Ulla Forsell

Ulla Forsell is one of the pioneers of studio glass in Europe. She has been making glass in her own workshop in central Stockholm since 1974. During these three decades she has combined making glass for use in the home with a succession of unique works of art, many of them thematically linked under such headings as Hanging Gardens, Boxes, Houses, Bamboo Groves, Jars with buttons, Heavenly Ladders and Rose Bamboo. Her work is characterized by a very personal style expressed in bright but subtle colours – and often displaying a (humorous) sense of delight in her task.
Large circular iconic dishes have featured in many exhibitions over the years. In the spring of 1993 her first dishes with "three-dimensional" applications of flowers, fruits and leaves or mirror-finished fish were shown to wide critical acclaim. Yet another example of her ability to find ways of giving aesthetic expression to a sense of wonder at the way light plays on the forms of the natural world.
Among her more recent creations are a series of looking glasses that, rather than reflecting the beholder, draw the eye into a shimmering and mysterious interior. These "mirrors" are "constructed" – like so many of her sculptural pieces - from blown, colour-cased glass that has been slumped and mirrored so that it reacts to light in a way that has never been seen before.
Light and the colour of light are natural preoccupations when one lives as far north as Stockholm. Ulla Forsell's art shows just what a miraculous medium glass is for exploiting light; a stimulus for the mind and a joy to the eye.
