Gala Glass

From Murano to the New World
Murano, Italy - a small island close to Venice - is the world's premiere center for crystal glass artistry and has produced families of master glassmakers for centuries. Angelo Tiozzo was the firstborn son of such a family. Feeling the effects that poverty had on his family, a young Angelo (11), threw his school books in the Murano canal and, unbeknownst to his parents, went to work in a glass workshop (but not the one where his father worked). The next week, he gave his mother his paycheck and she embraced him, knowing that extra money would help feed the rest of the family. From that early age, Angelo began to polish his craft under the watchful eye of the area's great glass masters. His younger brothers soon joined him in Murano's glass workshops and all of them have had careers in the Murano glass arts.

In 1966, Angelo traveled from Murano to Canada to exhibit his talents at the 1967 World Fair and Exposition in Montreal with a rudimentary knowledge of English and just $20 in his pocket! After the Expo, he stayed on and helped build Gala Glass, a small workshop made up of Murano artists in Canada. Impressed with all that this country had to offer, Angelo decided to remain in Canada, quickly becoming the country's authority on handmade glass creations. More than four decades and 50 years of glassmaking experience later, Angelo has transformed Gala Glass from a fledgling operation run out of his basement into a vibrant family business (alongside his wife and two sons) with customers across North America.

Today, Angelo and his associates use various crystal glass shaping techniques to create designs that are inspired by the Italian crystal glass making legacy. These creations were historically sold exclusively during the holiday season in kiosks located in various shopping malls across Canada. Recently, Gala Glass opened its online boutique at www.galaglass.com to let everyone around the world enjoy its handmade creations year-round.
