David Reekie

Fran Staniland

Fran Staniland: "I am a glass blower/designer and am currently running my own business having achieved an MA in Glass in 2007 and a BA in Glass and Ceramics in 2006 at the University of Sunderland.
My work is strongly influenced by my experiences and the freeblown sculptural vessels in my Ice Series have been inspired by the beautiful blues and whites I saw on the Columbian Icefields in Canada. My work uses thick glass which is cut and highly polished to highlight the refraction and reflection within each piece. Each vessel is very tactile and the clarity of the glass constantly reacts with the light.
I am constantly excited by the possibilities of glass. The uncertainty of the medium is stimulating with the pliable nature of the hot glass contrasting so much with the precise form of the cold glass. Glass is pure and for me captures moods which are held in layers. I create freeblown sculptural vessels. I add crisp cuts to emphasise contrasts and then allow the light to play over each piece for individuals to find their own inspiration from within."

Haley Haddow

Haley Haddow
Living in the emirate of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Haley Haddow at “The Glass Dominion” grew up in West London, United Kingdom, surrounded by a vast array of fashion, music, art and culture.
Her connection to art influenced by this eclectic mix is rooted in her fascination with colour, from early school days producing coloured schedules for friends and later in life, an interest in interior design encompassing furniture, fabrics, and textiles and now the medium of kiln-formed fused glass.
Haley discovered her passion for glass from visiting art galleries. This ultimately prompted her to undergo formal training in glass fusing, and from there she has gone on to explore various fusing techniques.
“Fused glass has become a new expression for me, enabling me to create textures and shapes that shout out to be touched, demand to be looked at, wrapped in a myriad of colour blends that trigger emotions, memories and are seductively inviting.
Colors often have different meanings in various cultures and living in the UAE has given me the opportunity to research this amongst my expat friends and colleagues. Design is a very important aspect of Arabic culture, exploring this using the medium of glass is both challenging and exciting.
My work incorporates bowls, plates, platters, vases and wall panels, showcasing a body of work that is a modern variation of the traditional idea of functional and non-functional glasswork.
It is both contemporary and unique."

Gala Glass
From Murano to the New World
Murano, Italy - a small island close to Venice - is the world's premiere center for crystal glass artistry and has produced families of master glassmakers for centuries. Angelo Tiozzo was the firstborn son of such a family. Feeling the effects that poverty had on his family, a young Angelo (11), threw his school books in the Murano canal and, unbeknownst to his parents, went to work in a glass workshop (but not the one where his father worked). The next week, he gave his mother his paycheck and she embraced him, knowing that extra money would help feed the rest of the family. From that early age, Angelo began to polish his craft under the watchful eye of the area's great glass masters. His younger brothers soon joined him in Murano's glass workshops and all of them have had careers in the Murano glass arts.
In 1966, Angelo traveled from Murano to Canada to exhibit his talents at the 1967 World Fair and Exposition in Montreal with a rudimentary knowledge of English and just $20 in his pocket! After the Expo, he stayed on and helped build Gala Glass, a small workshop made up of Murano artists in Canada. Impressed with all that this country had to offer, Angelo decided to remain in Canada, quickly becoming the country's authority on handmade glass creations. More than four decades and 50 years of glassmaking experience later, Angelo has transformed Gala Glass from a fledgling operation run out of his basement into a vibrant family business (alongside his wife and two sons) with customers across North America.
Today, Angelo and his associates use various crystal glass shaping techniques to create designs that are inspired by the Italian crystal glass making legacy. These creations were historically sold exclusively during the holiday season in kiosks located in various shopping malls across Canada. Recently, Gala Glass opened its online boutique at www.galaglass.com to let everyone around the world enjoy its handmade creations year-round.

Kari Russell-Pool

Kari Russell-Pool:"My husband, Marc Petrovic, and I have been working as studio artists since our respective graduations from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1990, and 1991.
Marc makes pieces that are predominantly glass, but also contain wood and metal components. I invite you to checkout his web site at www.marcpetrovic.com. I am primarily a flame worker. I create form from pattern with a technique I developed on my own. Although Marc and I strive to retain our individual work and approach, we have collaborated to a greater or lesser extent since college. We each offer insight and suggestions on the other's work. Our collaborations most often incorporate Marc’s blown birds into my structures, but after years of bouncing things off each other, we each live in the other's work.
Somewhat unique to flame working, I melt and pull all my own glass rods from the same glass furnace that Marc sculpts his components. This allows a compatibility between the blown glass birds and the flame worked structures. This soft glass is seldom used by flame workers on a larger scale because of it’s inherent difficulties. This glass does not take the stress of torch work well, as would a borosilicate glass, but does allow a greater range of color variations, and the unique ability to be fused with furnace blown components.
My overall approach is one of a watercolor. Coloring with glass powders, and pulling my own glass rods, allows us an extraordinary control over color. By layering the color and manipulating the density, our hope is the flow between the blown and flame-worked glass appears effortless. In glass there is often a 'right' way to do things. I am more a proponent of the cowboy way. The cowboy way invites invention, and serves the master of the final result, rather than proper technique. I am proud to be called a craftsman, because craftsmanship underlies all I do, even if I am occasionally caught being an artist."

Patricia Von Musulin

Her early career, prior to her current involvement with fashion, was in the field of industrial design. Clients ranged from "The Metropolitan Museum of Art", for whom she created many of the reproductions of objects for the "King Tut" show, to Pierre Cardin for whom she helped design his automobile. She also had the privilege to work closely with the famous scientist and art restorer, Gustav Berger.
Creating a body of work known as much for its powerful originality and signature style as for its unique aesthetic ambition, Patricia von Musulin seeks to use her work to re-imagine the very idea of jewelry itself. Her collections employ a wide array of materials to evoke deep symbolism and psychological associations. Crystal-like transparency evoke the undulating currents of water, the source of all life. In contrast, the deep black tones of her "Ebony Collection" reflect our cultural fascination with "The Primitive"and the multiracial nature of contemporary urban life.
Her work is in the permanent collections of "The Metropolitan Museum of Art", "The Boston Museum of Fine Arts", "The National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution" as well as "The Museum at the Fashion institute of Technology".
Although Patricia von Musulin lives a very international lifestyle, at home in Istanbul or Prague as much as New York, all of her designs are manufactured in New York City.

Aaron Gross became acquainted with glassblowing while attending the California College of Art, CCAC. He originally set out to become a sculptor/ceramicist, but soon found his true calling to be a glassblower, a devotion and talent which he worked hard to develop. While still in Art school, he worked for the renowned Union Street goblet factory in Oakland, CA. His devotion to glass kept him continually under the tutelage of, and in cooperation with, a long series of glass masters.
Now himself a veteran glassblower, he continues to stretch the boundaries of glass craftsmanship at his own studio, Austin Art Glass, since 2003. Aaron’s work encompasses a wide variety of styles and shapes including Old World techniques and high-tech dichroic compositions. He employs a variety of traditional tools and techniques that have been in use for hundreds of years in glass art. He particularly enjoys creating glass with 12th to 14th century Venetian aspects as well as more modern, contemporary styles.
